ABOUT THE ALFA ROMEO SPIDER
The Alfa Romeo Spider was introduced at the 1966 Geneva Motor show, receiving rave reviews. The car was the last complete design by Battista Pinninfarina, founder of the Turin based design house, and designer of a wide range of Italian exotic automobiles.
Over the years, numerous changes were made to the car, and the styling remained very pleasing even in light of increased requirements for stronger bumpers, and safety equipment. The mid-1980-s brought the square tailed cars with front chin spoilers, subtle rear trunk lip spoilers and larger side view mirrors. Unlike some of the other European sports cars, the lines of the Alfa matured very gracefully, until the end of the production of the Alfa Spider in 1993.
Early Alfa Spider's were equipped with 1600 twin cam engines which were later increased in size to two-liter, fuel injected versions. The larger, current engines, proved to be very reliable, and offered excellent drivability, torque, and good overall performance for a small convertible. The Alfa Spider Quadrifoglio is the "Best of the Best", in Alfa Romeo convertibles of the 1980's. They are comfortable, fun to drive, and offer very attractive styling, at an affordable price. Unlike many of the earlier British roadsters, the Alfa's offered increased refinement, performance, and reliability, as well. They also came with improved "creature comforts" including air conditioning, power windows, nice sound systems, power steering and beautiful interiors. "Opening up" the car to the sky above is simply a matter of undoing (from the drivers seat) the two latches from the windshield area, and pushing it back to the rear storage area..instant convertible! This 1987 Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio is an extremely nice, well maintained example. We regularly seek out exceptional Alfa Romeo's, and during 2004, were fortunate enough to have a number of beautiful examples. Frankly, this particular Alfa car stands out as being an exceptional car for a number of reasons.

Not only is this Alfa a rare find due to the extremely good condition, but also, it has always been a California car and has never been exposed to the salt and inclement weather that is so prevalent in many parts of the United States. This has been strictly a weekend car that has seen very limited, but regular use over the course of the past 10+ years. It has been only hand washed and waxed, as needed, and always garaged.
BODY /TRIM / TOP
The body is finished in its original silver color. As a Spider Quadrifoglio, the Alfa has the lovely beautiful interior that is unique to the "Quad" version of the Spider. The car also includes the factory Quadrifoglio hardtop that is in very good condition, with excellent glass, rubber trim and headliner. When in place, this hardtop is one of the best looking Unlike many hardtops of the era, this hardtop actually adds to the appearance of the Alfa "Quad" and is highly sought after by Alfa owners as an addition to their cars. For those of you in colder climates, the top is very functional, as well, and has working rear "electric lines."
The paint is extremely high gloss with no peeling, fading, or signs of damage. As the photographs suggest, this is a very pretty car, indeed. The cars exterior is in superb condition and, perhaps most importantly, is totally free from rust, pitting or damage. Even a very close, critical inspection does not reveal the usual door dings, dents, scratches and damage typical on an Alfa of this vintage. The hood is totally free from the usual parking dent/damage on the front of the car. Information obtained directly from the previous owner (and supported by a through inspection of the vehicle), indicates that the Alfa has ever been involved in a serious accident, or had any major damage of any kind. The front of the car is very clean and free from the usual "road rash" and front end damage that exists on the older and very vulnerable front ends of the Alfa Spiders.
The convertible top on the Alfa is the original that is in very good condition showing typical wear for a top of this age. The window is very clear, the top seals well, and it is weather tight. It was protected with a towel when in the down position, and the rear window is perfectly clear, as a result. The latches work well although one of the straps that are used to pull it tight is torn (typical on the older Alfa Spiders).
This Alfa Quadrifoglio includes the desirable and very attractive factory hardtop. The matching hardtop is in excellent structural condition and has no damage to the side or rear glass, a working rear defroster (electric lines), according to the previous owner. The fasteners (both front and rear) are original and the top fits securely and do not leak. As the photographs suggest, the hardtop is in very good original condition and, we believe, is one of the best looking additions to any sports car of this era.
As expected with an automobile of this quality that has been garaged, pampered by its owner, and rarely (if ever) exposed to the elements, the Alfa does not have the typical rust found on sports cars in most parts of the USA. An inspection of the rocker panels, rear lower fenders, under hood area, spare tire "well", and undercarriage reveals a dry, clean and rust free car. The doors, hood, and trunk line up extremely well, with even gaps, and close easily and securely. The underside of the hood is clean for a vehicle of this age and free of significant dirt, oil and grease (see photos on the Website). The original factory stickers are in place on the underside of the hood, and are undamaged and legible.
The door locks operate properly as does the lock on the glove box door. The trunk releases with the inside release, as per factory specifications, and has a working lock on the handle, located inside of the passenger compartment. There is also a gas cap release located inside the passenger compartment, which can be locked to secure the exterior gas cap.
The exterior trim is in also in very good condition. The front and rear bumpers have no scratches, nicks, or other, typical damage found on "Big City" Alfa's that are exposed to parallel parking, on a regular basis. The bumpers are straight, free from accident damage, and have never been re-painted. The photos accurately reflect the beauty of the exterior of this Alfa.
The exterior plastic trim and other exterior moldings have virtually no damage and in excellent condition. The power side windows are functional and free from cracks and damage. The front windshield has a few small, minor chips consistent with a vehicle of this age and a chip that is located very low (below the windshield wiper) on the passenger side that has appears to have been repaired to prevent spreading. It is hardly noticeable from the driver's side. The chrome surrounding trim around the windshield is in excellent condition.
The interior is in absolutely fantastic, original condition. Of course, as a Spider Quadrifoglio, the car has the upgraded gray sport style seats with red carpet/trim. Virtually every example of a late model "Quad" that we have seen/owned shows significant wear on the front seats, either the bolsters of the seats or the suede portions (or both!), and on the dash. This Alfa's interior shows virtually no signs of wear, especially for a convertible of this vintage. Its most recent owner has lovingly cared for the car, and it shows. The seats usually become very dirty and terribly worn, but this is not the case with this particular Alfa Spider "Quad". The interior is extremely clean, and free from rips, tears and visible dirt. The drivers seat is in very good condition and the previous owner indicated that it had been recovered (in what appears to be a more durable but matching & red stitched material), which would account for its excellent condition. While the photos do not show the drivers side seat bolster, there is NO wear on either the top or botom of the seat. The passenger seat is also excellent with no rips, tears or damage and only the normal signs of patina from fine leather.
The dash is finished in black, and the door panels are tastefully finished in black and gray, and are virtually perfect. The center console is black, and in great condition, free from any cracks, damage or signs of wear. The dash has the very typical (but small) crack that goes through the dash vent. It has not been repaired but does not detract from the appearance of the interior. The trunk is finished in black carpet that is free from any rips, stains or damage of any kind.
Of course, there is absolutely NO rust in the trunk.
The door sills and door jambs are clean, and free from dirt and grease. The retracting seat belts are original, free of any fraying or damage, as are the receiving parts of the seat belt units. Even the fasteners that hold the shoulder harnesses remain in place.
The gauges are all functional and even the clock works, and keeps accurate time! The lenses are clean, and do that do not have any cracks or damage. The center console is also free from cracks and the shift boot is in excellent original condition. The shift knob is the original, as is the steering wheel, a 4-spoke sport wheel and has the center-mounted horn that works. The Alfa is equipped with a driver's side air bag.
The "Quad" has an updated sound system including the addition of speakers (hidden under the front footwell) along with the typical speakers that are flush mounted on the rear package shelf (shown in photo).
The glove box contains the original factory warranty manual, and the manual for the stereo, along with the other factory documents.
ENGINE & MECHANICAL COMPONENTS
The Alfa Quadrifoglio runs and drives beautifully. Within the past month it passed California's strict new dynamometer smog test, with absolutely no problems. California buyers can use the current smog certificate until May 2005, for the transfer and registration of the Alfa Romeo.
A review of the records for the previous 20 years reflects frequent maintenance and a "cost no object" approach to the care of Alfa. In fact, the car was serviced at a local Alfa specialist who completed needed repair/service on a regular basis.

The owners records indicate that the engine has been rebuilt (both top end and bottom end) including all new rod bearings, piston set, rings, seals, valves, re-surfaced head and all new seals, gaskets and related parts. At this time, considerable other work was completed including new drive shaft support, transmission seals, flex couplings and syncromesh rings. These repairs were completed to continue to have the car in superb operating condition at all times.
* Some of the receipts show the same mileage but different repair dates suggesting that the odometer may have been inoperable for a brief period of time. However, it is clear from both the extensive records, and the condition of the Alfa that it has been extremely well maintained and at great expense. In fact, the receipts for two of the repair bills (engine rebuild and other work including complete braking system) totaled in excess of $8700.00. Obviously every effort has been made to make this a very solid, reliable and usable Alfa Spider Quadrifoglio, and it shows both cosmetically and mechanically.
Please note that unlike many of the Alfa's that are neglected after several years or ownership, this particular car continued to receive the care and attention that it deserved up to the present time.
We often times see well maintained cars. However, it is extremely rare to see a sports car that has had such extensive proactive maintenance work done on a regularly scheduled basis. The change of differential and transmission fluids, frequent oil changes, coolant changes and tune ups are certain to contribute to a long engine life and continued reliability.
When it comes to drivability, this particular Alfa is absolutely great, and it drives like a new Alfa. The car is great fun to drive and does not exhibit any problems. The car starts immediately when cold and hot, and runs cool, even in warm California temperatures. The battery is excellent and, as a result of the fuel injection, starts the car on the first attempt. For California buyers, the registration on the car is paid in full until 6/16/05, so license fees are due at this time.
The engine is very strong and does not smoke, leak excessive fluids, or exhibit any drivability problems what so ever. The Alfa idles smoothly at just below 1000 rpm, does not hesitate, and pulls strongly through the gears and, in typical Alfa fashion, has a wonderful exhaust note.
As a result of the 5-speed transmission, the car can be driven easily at highway speeds with absolutely no problem. The characteristically weak 2nd gear syncromesh shows absolutely no weakness in this Alfa. The car can easily be down shifted form 3rd gear to 2nd gear at reasonable speeds. Reverse gear engages smoothly, unlike many of the Alfa's that we have drive/owned. Of course, the car absolutely never pops out of reverse gear, and does not have any transmission, rear end noise.
There is no noise in the driveline and the clutch engages properly and without slippage, chattering or fuss. The car steers straight and sure, the brakes work well and stop the car without any pulling, squeaking or noise. The emergency brake is fully functional.
We have owned over 15 Alfa's during the past 20 years and can say with confidence that is one of the nicest driving examples of an Alfa Spider Quadrifoglios that we have had the pleasure of owning.
