EARLY PORSCHE 911 - A BIT OF HISTORY

Porsche's introduction of the 911 in 1965 was a watershed. After years steadily improving the 356 the 911 was a dramatic departure and a leap of faith both for Porsche and for its legions of loyal owners.

The car still looked like a Porsche, and the engine remained behind the rear axle but gone were Dr. Porsche's tried and proven torsion bar/trailing arm front suspension in favor of lower A-arms and McPherson struts. Gone, too was the swing arm rear suspension, replaced by semi-trailing arms. However radical the body design and suspension changes may have seemed, even more dramatically different was the engine. The highly developed flat four that traced its ancestry back to the pre-WWI Volkswagen was replaced by a flat six. It was still air cooled, to be sure, but smoother and more powerful. It also revved much higher as Porsche thoughtfully provided a 5-speed transaxle to get the most from the 911's increased rpm.

Starting life as an ambitious two-liter displacing 1,991 cc, the new Porsche 911 had overhead camshaft valve actuation, something only the most high strung racing Porsches had offered before, and delivered 148 horsepower at 6,100 rpm measured with US SAE standards (more than the 356's expensive and finicky Carrera engine.) The increased power and aerodynamic body design gave the 911 a top speed of 130 mph. Equally-balanced weight distribution, the new suspension, 112mm longer wheelbase, and stiffer full unit-body construction, vastly improved the car's handling.

The 911 quickly began racing, capturing SCCA Production titles and in 1966, raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans where a 911S won the 2-liter GT class and finished 14th overall. The 911's performance and the continuing development of racing models and modifications by Porsche and literally thousands of private entrant, teams, and racing shops, brought continuing success and has made the Porsche 911 the ideal competition car for everyone from novice weekend and track day racers, to the ultimate professional teams like Kremer, Joest, Brumos and Holbert.

THIS PARTICULAR 1966 PORSCHE 911 ("RSR" RECREATION)

It is important to note that this 1966 Porsche carries VIN #303120. According to the information that we have located, the VIN series for 1966 911 cars began with 301,000 making this example the 2,120th car produced for the 1966 model year. As such, the car is a very early, desirable 911 Porsche.

The VIN plate (inside of the front trunk) also confirms the car "Heizeinrichtung Typ" 911 S 66 (911 s 1966). A photo of the tag & stamped VIN plate is shown in the grouping of photos.

This is anything but a stock example of the desirable, short wheel based, early Porsche 911. The car has undergone a transformation to give it the appearance of a later model, RSR car with wider flares, a strong (and fresh) 2.7 liter Weber carbureted engine, and a host of suspension and other modifications. While the car has not been campaigned as a track car, it certainly has the potential for PCA (Porsche Club of America) gatherings, or participation in a wide range of other club events ranging from NASA to SCCA sponsored activities.

However, even with the modifications, the beauty of this Porsche is that it remains a very useable, tractable street car. It has been used regularly on the street in California and is currently licensed and registered through April, 2010. As a 1966, it is exempt from any smog requirements/inspections in California and most other U.S. states.

Clearly, the major strength of the Porsche is its mechanical components and recent rebuild. Within the previous 7,500 miles a substantial sum has been invested to make this a fast, reliable and fun car to drive. Listed below are the details of the upgrades & improvements / rebuild.

COSMETIC CONDITION

The Porsche was repainted within the previous 10 years in what is reported as 2-stage lacquer paint, & has been a fair weather car ever since. The paint is very high gloss and in good overall condition. It is free from any significant signs of accident damage or major repairs. The front bumper has been recently re-painted (not because of accident damage but due to the typical, small rock chips) and is free from any damage, chips or dings. Protective 3M covering is applied to the front part of the hood to prevent damage.

The doors, trunk and hood fit well and the front and rear latch releases (and the gas tank release) work. The engine bay is extremely clean/fresh and reflects the considerable care that the Porsche has received along with the substantial recent work. The front trunk area is clean and free from any signs of rust.

The following is a summary of some of the features of the exterior of the car:

* 3M protection on the front, leading edge of the hood

* Very straight body

* RSR style "whale tale" (Fit is good but with "typical" gaps)

* Professionally integrated wide flares

* Good panel fit

* All windows work and glass is very good

* Included with the Porsche is a complete "Carrera" kit for adding the Carrera stripes to the sides, front, and rear of the car should the new owner decide to do so .

INTERIOR FEATURES

* Recaro Sport seat (driver's side) at a cost of $1200.00

Please call us for specific pricing to the closest Port to your location.

* As with virtually all collector/specialty vehicles, we find that parts and resources are readily available for this (and most every vehicle), thanks in large part to the Internet!

* in addition to the purchase price of the vehicle, California buyers will be subject to sales tax, documentation fee, DMV transfer fees and license/registration. Out-of-state buyers will be responsible for the purchase price of the vehicle and any local taxes/fees will be bear responsibility to pay in their respective state.

IMPORTANT NOTE: if the vehicle is delivered or driven in California and driven on California roads, sales-tax, license registration and transfer fees will be assessed per California law.

* While we encourage telephone calls to discuss this vehicle in greater detail we will not respond to inquiries asking "what is the reserve'? Also, if you would prefer that we call you to answer any questions about the vehicle; shipping alternatives, etc. please e-mail us with your telephone number and will gladly get back in touch with you.

* As with any collectible vehicle of this vintage we are unable to provide a warranty or guarantee of condition. However, we make every effort to accurately represent our vehicles, and highlight both positive items as well as areas that require attention. We ask that prospective buyers consider our EBay history/feedback (User name never22many), standing in the community, length of time in business, and other factors when purchasing a collectible vehicle from Classic Cars Ltd.

* Please keep in mind that, as with any used vehicle, minor cosmetic issues/flaws may be present that add to the "patina" of the car and are a part of even the best restoration, or even a relatively new, used "pre-owned" vehicle. Also, ownership of a vintage Porsche (or any other type vehicle, for that matter) is more enjoyable if the owner is familiar with the "realities" of these unique cars. Unlike more modern day vehicles, these cars require regular, ongoing care/maintenance and some mechanical knowledge, patience, and understanding that can make the experience considerably more pleasant. That said, Porsche owner's will tell you (emphatically) that they love their cars and wouldn't trade them for anything!

* Finally, much of the information (especially the details pertaining to the engine rebuild and other improvements) has been provided by the vehicles owner. We have every reason to believe that it is accurate (the owner of this car has been a long term collector car enthusiast and customer of ours for close to 10 years), but are unable to document all of the details of the rebuild / upgrades. As a result, we are unable to guarantee the accuracy of the information provided in this narrative.

PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER

As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to:

- How long have they been in business?

- How much experience do they have with collector cars?

- How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive EBay feedback)?

- How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle?

- Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance?

- Does the seller have a surety bond to protect the financial transaction?

- What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license?

- Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances?

- Do they enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation?

- Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
