OCELOT - HISTORY

1969 Ocelot II by Sand Chariots of Fullerton, California. Built from 1967 through 1970, the one-piece body shell is designed for the shortened VW floor pan but long enough to completely cover the longer 6-cylinder Chevrolet Corvair engine. Note: The history of the Ocelot Dune Buggy / Company is featured in the book Dune Buggy Handbook, "The A-Z of VW Based Buggies Since 1964" by James Hale.

Last registered in 1985, this dune buggy oozes with 1970s charm. It would be hard to overstate the originality of this very period piece of dune buggy history. Built and first titled in 1969 on a 1967 pan, the quality of the build makes this an exceptional example.

Virtually 100% of the original build pieces used in 1969 remain unchanged and in excellent original condition making this a highly unusual and collectible show buggy. The orange-gold gel coat is the original finish and is in outstanding, nearly perfect, condition. There are no cracks and no holes drilled anywhere. The vehicle has been stored indoors over the years, so zero sun fade. The interior is fully carpeted with snaps and carpet padding- but the carpet is showing signs of aging and the material is unraveling in places. The seats look are MGB units and tilt forward for rear access. The rear area has a base seat pad and a rear access "door" to the engine compartment. The windshield glass has no cracks and the top is just about perfect without any rips or tears. The floor pans and undercarriage are in excellent condition - no rust or damage (see photos).

This Dune Buggy runs extremely well and is a great driver with that traditional, unique buggy look. The history is that this Ocelot was was assembled by the manufacturer, as a display / show unit so the assembly quality is high for a vehicle of this type. The working odometer reads just over 3,400 miles and represents the total mileage on the car since it was built in 1969 (at the time using components that were only a few years old).

When the Ocelot was built the engine, transmission and drive-line components came from recent vehicles (only a few years old) and, as a result, we suspect that they were low mileage items. The engine runs absolutely great with no unusual noise, smoke or leaks. The transmission has just been professionally and properly rebuilt and the braking system gone through. The Ocelot has no has no major mechanical issues and starts immediately even after sitting for a prolonged period of time. The tires look great and have plenty of tread but are dry rotted/cracked and should be changed if the Ocelot is to be used for anything but a show vehicle. They can, however, be driven on and have held air for the entire time that we have owned the Dune Buggy.

The photographs will provide the prospective buyer with a good idea of what to expect with this vehicle. If anything, the buggy looks better in person than in the pictures. It truly looks like it has been in a time capsule since from the late 1960's / early 1970's.

Thanks for considering this unique example!
