INTRODUCTION
It is rare that we find ourselves as a loss for words or in a position where we do not know where to begin to describe a vehicle. Frankly, we are struggling to find suitable adjectives to describe this S3-R BMW M3. Let us start by saying that it is, simply stated; the best late model BMW performance Coupe that we have had the pleasure of owning.
We have had more than our share of fast sedans and sporting coupes (including the highly respected M5, AMG and others), but no other example offers the combination of performance, handling and creature comforts that come together as well as they do on the S3-R. The BMW S3-R is extremely fast, handles even better yet is 100% reliable and fitted with all of the stock BMW options including: navigation, back-up sensors, 6-CD and all of the other luxury featured one would expect on a high end BMW sporting car.
THIS PARTICULAR BWM M3 S3-R
This S3-R has had one California owner that purchased the car new in California and worked with Dinan Engineering to build what may well be one of the best, most reliable, usable, high performance M3's available today. It is difficult to imagine that any car could have received more "cost no object" attention both relative to the construction of the car and its ongoing maintenance and servicing.
It is important to note that the M3 was driven in its stock, non-supercharged mode for the majority of its life. Only within the previous 40,000~ miles did the car receive the benefit of the Dinan S3-R upgrade along with the other, S3-R package improvements (outlined in detail below).
For those of you that are unfamiliar with Dinan background information includes:

It also received more comprehensive servicing at the "Minor" service inspection intervals. This S3-R has received nothing but the best care both cosmetically and mechanically..period. The car has been 100% reliable and was never raced or abused by its mature owner and his wife. Needless to say, the car received and occasional "spirited drive" but as enthusiasts will attest, there is a significant difference between abusing a car and an occasional spirited drive.
When the BMW was delivered to its original and only owner it was ordered to his exacting specifications and, at the time, the M3's were selling at a price in excess of the Total Suggested Retail Price. This particular M3 Coupe, finished in Steel Gray Metallic was delivered at a cost of over $60,000.00. The engine bay is, and always has been, kept as clean & tidy as the interior. It is very clean and has been wiped down when the car received a hand washing. The photos tell the story regarding the condition of the exterior, interior, rear cargo area, and even the engine bay of this beautiful BMW M3.
The trunk area is spotless, and contains the navigation unit along with the remote CD changer. The carpet is perfect. All of the original factory tools are in place. FYI, the M3 cars were not fitted with a spare when new as result of the rear exhaust configuration. However, the battery is in its stock location in the rear trunk area of the M3 and properly covered.
COSMETIC CONDITION - EXTERIOR / TRIM
When people see this BMW, they are amazed to hear that it is not a much newer car. Simply stated, the car is absolutely striking, and has the appearance of a much later model. The BMW is finished in the especially attractive color combination of Steel Gray Metallic / Black..a beautiful, "all business" look. The interior is accented with the optional, upgraded aluminum trim that fits very well with a high performance Coupe like the M3 S3-R.
There is NO damage to the paint / body, and the M3 has absolutely no history of collision or previous body repair. Of course, the Car Fax report supports this clean history along with the fact that the M3 has had one original owner. The paint has a brilliant shine / gloss and is in absolutely spectacular condition with NO signs of fading, scratches, door dings or other imperfections. In terms of the exterior condition of the car, this M3 is as free from flaws as any car of this vintage that we have seen, or owned.
Part of the reason for the condition of the body has to do with the cars "re-freshening" that took place in early 2008. At that time, the absolutely meticulous owner decided to add the subtle but very attractive CSL rear deck lid and have the typical front road chips removed from the low, front spoiler of the M3. Well, one thing led to another and he made the decision to paint the entire car. It is very important to note that this car was not repainted by just any paint shop. In fact, the car was repainted by one of the few factory authorized BMW paint facilities in Northern California. The car was disassembled to bring the paint back to its original delivery condition and BMW experts and independent BMW enthusiasts that have seen the car agree that the goal was exceeded.
The complete estimate is in the file and it supports that there was no damage to the car. The re-paint was completed strictly for cosmetic reasons, completed to the highest possible standards and the car has an appearance that is actually as good as or better than when it was new. When the paint work was completed, all of the front end components of the car were changed including; grills, fog lights, kidney grills, marker lights, etc. Also, the emblems were changed and other minor cosmetic enhancements were made to make "clean-up' the cars exterior appearance. Note that the Dinan rear trunk badge is not in place making this car one heck of a "sleeper." To the casual observer, the M3 has the appearance of having a virtually stock exterior with the exception of larger wheels and tires.
Cosmetically, this car is exceptional, not only for its year, but even for a much later M3. There are no significant dings, scratches, nicks, or flaws on the exterior surfaces. Any extremely minor imperfections are noticeable only upon extremely close inspection and only visible to the most critical eye (really nothing other than a few pin-point sized chips in the very lower spoiler that are not noticeable unless you bend down to inspect the spoiler). In fact, even a close examination of the car does not reveal any dents, dings or damage that detract from the overall quality and attractiveness of the M3. To say that this car has been fanatically well maintained is an understatement.
We believe that the wheels that are fitted to the E46 S3-R are some of the most attractive wheels available in the market today (also among the most expensive). The wheels have no curbing, scratches or damage whatsoever. The wheels are shod with high performance V-Rated Michelin Pilot tires that have decent remaining tread on the front tires but will require rear replacement within several thousand miles.
The glass is free from any stars or scratches, and all of the power windows, sunroof, navigation system and other electronic systems are fully functional.
INTERIOR CONDITION
The interior is equally as good as the exterior condition of the BMW. The appointments are very high quality and the interior has been very well cared for, indeed. The entire interior is in beautiful condition and is smoke free.
The car has beautiful leather interior that is free from any rips, tears or wear areas, and has been carefully maintained in a fashion that is consistent with the cars mechanical care. The car is beautifully appointed and shows little if any wear on any part of the interior. The sport seats are very comfortable, (and adjustable for width, as well as all other typical adjustments show only the patina (and aroma) of fine leather but are totally free from rips, tears, damage, or signs of neglect. Both front seats are fully adjustable electronically and even include adjustable leg "supports."
The rear seat has not been used for any type of car seat and is equally as good as the front seating areas, showing no wear.
This M3 also has the optional rear fold down seats and the "net" to hold items in place.
The carpet, door panels, dash, center console and other areas of the interior area are in beautiful condition reflecting the adult ownership / use of the car. This car was driven by one owner / drive (and his wife on a few occasions) and it shows! The carpets are covered with new M3 logo floor mats that are in excellent condition. The dash and aluminum trim is virtually perfect with no defects.
The photographs accurately reflect the condition of the interior and, for that matter, the entire car. This is a truly exceptional example that was purchased directly from the original owner, has never been sold at auction and is 100% no excuses.
DRIVING IMPRESSIONS - THIS PARTIUCLAR BMW M3
Over the years, we have been fortunate enough to own/drive virtually every model of BMW that has been produced during the past 25+ years. And, frankly, as everyday "drivers" we almost always have either a "3-Series" or a "5-Series" as one of our personal cars. To our way of thinking (and, for the past 10+ years road test magazines agree) that the 3-Series is a tremendous sporting Coupe. The cars provide room for 4+, handle very well (even in stock configuration) and offer a very high "fun quotient." The later model cars also benefit from traction control (DSC), along with the ability to use the car as a semi automatic by utilizing the options sport/automatic transmission mode.
For the true BMW enthusiast/purist, the later model BMW M3 (E46) is an absolutely amazing car. In Dinan trim it is amazing. With the S3-R package, the cars handling and performance is off the charts! Our long search for the perfect newer body style E46 M5 finally ended when we came across this particular car..more on that later.
This M3 runs and drives offers all of the benefits of the earlier M3 cars with the addition of a number of significant mechanical & performance upgrades. Needless to say, the most noteworthy change is the addition of the supercharged 462 horsepower, intercooled 6 cylinder power-plant and the incredibly versatile SMG 6 speed transmission.
Of course, as you would expect from a car of this caliber, built by Dinan, the M3 is 100% reliable and usable. Gone are the days when high horsepower and performance meant a lumpy idle, rough ride, and a complete lack of comfort and luxury. The M3 S3-R offers it all. Driven easily, the car is docile and luxurious. When put sport mode and driven in the more aggressive computer controlled settings, the car is an absolute monster. Estimates by various road tests suggest 0-60 mph times in the low 4 second range and actual tested top speeds approaching 190 mph. We certainly believe those numbers!
The maintenance that the car has received since the time it was delivered new in California is certainly a plus and is almost certain to minimize future mechanical concerns and prolonging the life of major components.
With over 462+ horsepower on tap, the car has excellent response in all of the ranges including acceleration from a standstill, highway speeds, and passing speeds on the highway. This car is downright fast and using words like "quick" do not fully describe the cars performance. We do need to offer a warning; however, this car belongs in the hands of experienced, capable drivers. It is not for the faint of heart. However, if treated with respect, we think this is one of the best high performance coupes ever produced.
The steering is precise and tight and there are absolutely no vibrations or problems with the car at any speed. The cars brakes are excellent, and stop the BMW straight and sure and the emergency brake is fully functional. The BMW will be sold to California buyers with a recent California smog certificate having just passed California's new stringent dynamometer testing program. Dinan has locations for servicing all around the USA and we ask that you make certain that the car is legal in you jurisdiction prior to bidding on the M3.
This M3 is a "No Surprises" car in every respect and a car that will make a BMW enthusiast out of anyone that has an interest in a serious, high performance, sports coupe.
