PORSCHE 911 - A BIT OF HISTORY

Porsche's introduction of the 911 in 1965 was a watershed. After years steadily improving the 356 the 911 was a dramatic departure and a leap of faith both for Porsche and for its loyal owners.

The 911 still looked like a Porsche, and the engine remained behind the rear axle but gone were Dr. Porsche's tried and proven torsion bar/trailing arm front suspension in favor of lower A-arms and McPherson struts. Gone, too was the swing arm rear suspension, replaced by semi-trailing arms. However radical the body design and suspension changes may have seemed, even more dramatically different was the engine. The highly developed flat four that traced its ancestry back to the pre-WWI Volkswagen was replaced by a flat six. It was still air cooled, to be sure, but smoother and more powerful. It also revved much higher as Porsche thoughtfully provided a 5-speed transaxle to get the most from the 911's increased rpm.

Starting life as an ambitious two-liter displacing 1,991 cc, the new Porsche 911 had overhead camshaft valve actuation, something only the most high strung racing Porsches had offered before, and delivered 148 horsepower at 6,100 rpm measured with US SAE standards (more than the 356's expensive and finicky Carrera engine.) The increased power and aerodynamic body design gave the 911 a top speed of 130 mph. Equally-balanced weight distribution, the new suspension, 112mm longer wheelbase, and stiffer full unit-body construction, vastly improved the car's handling.

In 1984 the 911 celebrated its 20th birthday. The SC 3.0 was replaced by the new Carrera with a 3.2 engine. Although the bodywork, suspension, and most of the interior were taken from the SC the Carrera was in most aspects better than its predecessor. It had more power, better brakes and was more luxurious.

After twenty years of producing the 911 it was expected that Porsche would come up with a new model to replace the 911. The new Carrera however proved the contrary, the 911 was just starting to mature. The model line-up was now really complete, with six styles to choose from. The new Carrera and Turbo could both be ordered as cabriolet, Targa or Coupé, and in the next years even more models would become available.

One of the novelties of 1984 was that the Carrera was now available with the wide body and spoilers of the Turbo. This "Turbo-Look" was a real hit. The "Turbo-Look" was considerably less costly than the actual Turbo but had the same great looks as its much more expensive "Counterpart." In 1986 the turbo-look also became available for the Targa and cabriolet.

SPECIFICATIONS

Porsche enthusiasts will immediately recognize the differences between the "Euro" version of the 1984 911 and the USA spec car. Not only did the Euro version generate additional horsepower (approximately +15%) it was also has more torque (about +10%). Also, the Euro version enjoyed the benefit of a compression ratio of 10.3:1 vs. the U.S. version that had a considerably lower Compression ratio of 9.5:1.

Finally, the Euro version was not only 110 lbs. lighter but the track was wider by 1.69 in. in the front and a noticeable 3.71 in. in the rear. Also, the turbo bodied version was wider by a whopping 7.04 in.!

Of course, the wheelbase remained the same for both cars.

1984 PORSCHE "TURBO WIDE BODY" - SUMMARY

VIN #WP0ZZZ91ZES100094 is a beautiful example of a rare, stock, higher horsepower, "Euro" version 911 "Turbo Body" all factory steel car. It is important to note that this Porsche was exported into the USA very early in its life and has been in California since the mid-1980's. The car carries the correct blue / gold license plates that were originally issued to the Porsche. The letter/numbering sequence of the plates supports that the car was imported no later than the late 1980's since the blue and gold license plates were "retired" by the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) in the late 1987.

Perhaps most important is the fact that the car carries the correct Bureau of Automotive Repair importation sticker (left inner door jamb) supporting that the car has been accepted / authorized for U.S. use. The car has passed the required California smog tests as required (documented on the Car Fax report) and carries a clear California title (NOT salvage) with the proper indication that the {Porsche is a "NON USA" car. The Porsche has been licensed & registered in the USA since it was brought over from Europe and, the cars most recent owner had the car insured with one of the major U.S. insurance companies. Note: While we do not anticipate any issues with governing bodies in other states, we ask that you be certain that you check with the appropriate authorities relative to the licensing, insuring and operation of a Bureau of Automotive & Repair approved non-USA imported vehicle BEFORE you bid or consider purchase of this vehicle. Please let us know if we can answer any questions relative to this matter.

Other hints that this is a desirable Euro version Carrera include the discreet but noticeable (to the Porsche enthusiast / aficionado) small side marker lights on the front fenders, Euro yellow rear lenses, a leather 3-spoke steering wheel (the same as a Turbo?) and a stance that appears to be slightly lower than the USA production cars. We believe that he car's rear Turbo spoiler was added but have no history as to when.

This 1984 Porsche Carrera has been owned locally for many years. The cars most recent owner has had the vehicle serviced at a local German car repair facility that specializes in Porsche's. During the previous 4+ years the 911 has travelled only 10,000~ miles and a PPI (Pre Purchase Inspection) was completed on the car prior to its purchase. A summary of additional maintenance / repair work can be found under the section entitled "Maintenance."

The Porsche shows absolutely no signs of rust and has been used minimally by its owner. Unfortunately, the owner is in a position where he must sell the car at this time. The Porsche was his lifelong dream car but circumstance (priorities) have changed and Porsche ownership is not in the cards at this stage of his life.

The Porsche is free from any signs of rust or body damage and a recent inspection of the cars undercarriage supports the recent mechanical work that has been done to the 911. Also, there are no signs of undercarriage or accident damage. The underside is as clean and straight as any 911 of this era that we have seen. The independent inspection supports our conclusions. The engine bay is very clean as is the trunk area. The detailed photographs accurately depict the cars overall condition.

This Porsche a lovely example of the highly sought after "turbo-look" 911. It includes a number of upgrades / features including:

- Leather Interior

- Factory Sunroof

- Functional Factory Air Conditioning

- Rear Turbo Spoiler

- Factory Spare Tire

- Factory Tool Kit

- Repair receipts (summarized below)

- Beautiful alloy wheels with polished outer edges / black insets

- "Whale tail" housing cooling element

- Factory sunroof

- Upgraded Alpine Eclipse sound system including:

- Trunk mounted CD player

- AM/FM CD Radio

- Rear speaker enclosure (attractively mounted above rear seating are

- Improved speakers (discreetly mounted)

MAINTENANCE

The Porsche has received the following maintenance / repairs within the last 10,000~ miles (supported by actual receipts):

At 96,763 miles: (Fewer than 100 miles ago)

- Replace rear shock absorbers (OEM style)

- 4 (Four) new "Z" rated tires (225 x 55ZR 16" rear, 205 x 55ZR front per factory specifications)

- Air filter service

- Safety inspection

- Rear bearings & seals

- Replaced hood shocks - front hood

- Replaced hood shocks - rear deck lid now stays up (even with turbo spoiler)

At 94,131 miles: Minor Service (oil, filter, check brakes & tires, fill fluids)

At 92,366 miles: Repair inner door handle, new wiper blades, replace door handle clips and linkage clip.

At approximately 91,900 miles: New master key and lighted key cap.

At 90,702 miles: Replace rear park brakes shoes and adjust. Front wheel alignment.

At 90,595 miles: Complete minor oil service

At 86,894 miles: Complete oil service

At 86,158 miles: Major service including tune-up, plugs, distributor cap, rotor, ignition wire set, replace camshaft oil hoses and 2 oil lines.

The repair history on the 911 supports that the Carrera has received regular service. The Car Fax report is "clean" and does not reflect and accident damage, theft, flood, odometer tampering, etc. Additionally, the Porsche's low mileage is documented chronologically on the independent Car Fax report.

ENGINE & MECHANICAL CONDITION

The Porsche has received frequent and regular inspections by a German (Porsche) repair specialist. The "911" is very strong mechanically including major components such as engine and transmission, rear end, brakes, and suspension. Oil changes have been frequent and the car received major tune-up items within approximately 10,000 miles. The Porsche has been owned and driven in "Suburbia" and always garaged when not in use. It has been the owners "Baby" for the last 4+ years.

Within 100 miles, the car was inspected to ensure that all of the service was current. The brake fluid and transmission fluid are clean and appear to have been changed regularly. The car has had a tune-up and new components (spark plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, etc) within the previous 10,000 miles along with other regular maintenance items.

The service history on this car speaks for itself but we took a few additional important steps to address the strength of the car that, frankly, very few sellers are willing to take. We had every confidence that this particular Porsche would stand up to the most stringent testing.

Specifically, we had both a compression test and leak down test (usually not performed, but important) performed on the car by an independent repair facility that is owned by a mechanic with experience in repairing high end vehicles including Ferrari's. The results were extremely positive and we must admit, based on the way the car runs / drives, we were not surprised.

The tests revealed the following:

Compression:

Cylinder #1 -190
Cylinder #2 200
Cylinder #3 195
Cylinder #4 195
Cylinder #5 195
Cylinder #6 205

Leak Down Test:

Cylinder #1 0%
Cylinder #2 1%
Cylinder #3 1%
Cylinder #4 0%
Cylinder #5 0%
Cylinder #6 0%

For those of you unfamiliar with the following will be helpful
in deciphering the results:

Compression: A maintenance test performed on a reciprocating engine to confirm the ability of the cylinders to hold the designed air pressure. A cylinder will fail a compression test if there is excessive leakage past the rings or any leak from inlet or exhaust valves.

The results should be high (high 190's and low 200's is excellent for a 6 cylinder Porsche engine). As important, there should be no more than a 10% variance between the cylinders (also excellent results).

Leak Down Test: A leak down or "cylinder leakage" test is similar to a compression test in that it tells you how well your engine's cylinders are sealing. But instead of measuring pressure, it measures pressure loss.

An engine in great condition should generally show only 5 to 10% leakage. An engine that's still in pretty good condition may show up to 20% leakage. But more than 30% leakage indicates trouble. NOTE: In this case less than 1% leakage was observed.Extremely good results!

When it comes to drivability, this particular Porsche is excellent and it drives as if it is only a few years old! The car is great fun to drive and exhibits absolutely no problems. The car starts immediately when cold and hot and runs cool, even in warm California temperatures. For California buyers, the registration on the car was renewed in January, 2010 so no license fees are due for almost on year. Also, prior to delivery, California buyers will receive a current California smog certificate.

The engine is very strong, free from any unusual noise and the cars regular mechanic has given the car a "Clean Bill of Health" during its regular inspections. The Porsche idles smoothly at just below 1000 rpm, and does not hesitate, have any unusual noises or issues. The increased horsepower in this European version 3.2 liter Carrera car makes it a great car to drive whether it is in town, at highway speeds, or on long trips. The additional horsepower is evident compared with the other, multiple mid-late 1980's Porsches that we have owned over the years.

There is no noise in the driveline and the clutch engages properly, and without slippage, chattering or fuss. There is no noise in the transmission or any part of the drive-line. The steering is precise and the car tracks straight and sure.

The brakes work great and stop the car straight and sure. The car passed the last safety inspection and recent inspection by a qualified mechanic (ex-Ferrari mechanic) within the previous 100 miles. Recommended repairs including the replacement of tires, front hood shocks and other minor issues were completed. The emergency brake is functional and correctly adjusted.

The engine and engine bay are very tidy, indeed. The engine is free from excessive oil, dirt and grease and the valve covers and transmission are clean considering the year make and model of the Porsche. We have owned/driven a large number of Porsches over the years, and can with confidence, that this is an excellent running/driving car that will provide years of future enjoyment.

EXTERIOR / BODY & TRIM

The body is finished in one of Porsches more sought after color combinations, Guards red with black leather interior. The paint is in excellent condition, high gloss and has only the slightest imperfections (a few pin size chips in the front). Outside of very minor imperfections that become are only noticable upon close, critical insopection, the Porsche is free from major flaws. The car is free from any paint peeling, orange peel or signs of inexpensive "quickie" painting or partial re-painting.

The front bumper does not have the appearance of being re-painted and the front bumper and hood areas are unusually free from even the usual "flurry" of road chips / "rash." There is no indication that the car has ever been involved in an accident, and this is confirmed by the Car Fax report that is clear and reflects that the car was driven an average of fewer than 3,700 miles per year. There are virtually no door dings and the body is free from any damage or significant flaws. The hood trunk and doors open and close properly (and stay open on their own due to recently installed shocks) and the panel fit is excellent. We can find no indication of previous accident damage or panel replacement.

All of the exterior trim is in very nice. The front and rear bumpers have virtually no significant flaws or noticeable "bumper rash", or damage. All of the plastic trim and other exterior moldings are in very good original condition. The side windows are free from cracks and damage, and operate perfectly. The front windshield is free from any cracks, major stars in the driver's line of vision, and the trim surrounding it is in excellent condition.

The Porsche has the "whale tale", but is devoid of any other badging, stripes, etc. If the new owner chooses, a rear "Turbo" emblem could be adding and this car would be virtually indistinguishable from a 930 Turbo Porsche.

As supported by the photographs, the "911" is totally free from rust, pitting or major damage to the body. There are absolutely no signs of rust on the typical rust prone areas of the Porsche, as a result of its life in California. An inspection of the rocker panels, rear lower fenders, under hood area, spare tire "well", and undercarriage reveals a dry, clean and rust free car. Also, please notice that the photographs taken with a flash show the original red undercarriage underneath the normal California light road patina. We ask that you carefully review the 100~ photographs and let us know if we can answer any specific questions.

The door locks operate properly as does the lock on the glove box door. The trunk releases with the inside release, as per factory specifications, and has a working lock on the handle, located inside of the passenger compartment.

The Porsche has beautiful alloy wheels (in upgraded 16" vs. the stock 15" size) with highly polished outer rims (and the appearance of being professionally clear-coated). While many of the photographs show the old tires, we recently changed all four tires since the tires were showing marginally acceptable remaining tread (identified during our normal safety inspection and a recommended replacement item).

The front spoiler has a few scrapes on the very lower part (rubber lip) but there is virtually no damage to the front underside or floor pan of the Porsche. There is no evidence of damage on the underbelly of the car or signs of accident damage. There is NO rust. We must emphasize that this 911 is totally free from rust. As the photos suggest, this one of the cleaner 911's that we have seen (both top and bottom!).

INTERIOR

The interior is in very nice overall condition. This particular Porsche is fitted with leather, power operated driver seat and all of the adjustments are functional. The front seats reflect the normal patina of real leather, but are free from any tears, rips of damage. The side seat bolsters are also damage free, and even the driver's side (often times badly worn/ripped) is in nice condition. As the photos show, the entire interior is in absolutely excellent condition, including the rear seats and the rear carpeted area when the seats are folded in the down position.

The dash is finished in black, as are the door panels and center console. The top portion of the dash in this Porsche falls is a "Good News / Bad News" scenario. The good news is that the car was manufactured with a beautiful leather dash. However, exposure to the sun over the course of time has resulted in separation of the stitching and some warping of the upper portion (top) of the dash. One alternative would be to cover the dash with an inexpensive (about $100.00) dash cap that would address the appearance of the dash. We didn't take that action anticipating that a future owner may have an interest in re-finishing the dash in leather. An adjustment has been made to the sale price for this item.

In any event, the front of the dash (as viewed from the drivers and passenger seats) is very good and free from damage / cracks. The instruments are all clear and fully functional. They accurately reflect the cars mechanical strength and recent positive leak down test & compression results. Everything works but the clock.

There are no cracks or noticeable signs of wear on the center console or instruments, switches or steering wheel. The side door panels are excellent, and free from damage, or cracking. The retracting seat belts are original, free of any fraying or damage, as are the receiving parts of the seat belt units. The door sills and door jambs are exceptionally clean and free from dirt and grease. The driver's side door jamb has the Bureau of Automotive Repair sticker that was placed on the car by the import authorities) certifying the Porsche as USA legal.

The car has an upgraded, high quality Alpine Eclipse AM / FM CD player with the same manufacture CD player and amplifier mounted in the front trunk area. As expected with a Porsche, the lights, gauges, and entire electrical system fully operational.

The trunk also contains the original carpet that is in very good condition. The trunk area is completely clean and contains the original spare and Porsche factory issued tool roll / kit. The trunk is totally free from any rust through, signs of leakage, or damage.

- How long have they been in business?

- How much experience do they have with collector cars?

- How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive EBay feedback)?

- How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle?

- Does the seller have a surety bond to protect the financial transaction?

- What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license?

- Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances?

- Do they enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation?

- Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
