BMW 2002tii - HISTORY

The BMW 2002 series is important in the history of BMW for several reasons, none the least of which it brought the company out of near bankruptcy in the 1950s and put BMW as a Marque on the map in the United States. It was the ancestral grandfather to the BMW 3 Series, and was produced from 1968 to 1976.

Today, German BMW importer Max Hoffman is credited for the car's creation, and indeed it was his very own idea. Earlier, he had suggested to BMW's engineering director that a 2.0 liter engine should be installed into the small two-door 1600-2 to improve performance and emissions.

The engineering director argued that the larger motor wouldn't fit, but Hoffman countered that it certainly would fit and if he refused to put the motor in, he would personally take a car with the new engine to 'Schorsch' Meier, a famous motorcycle racer, and have him install it. Almost immediately, this brought action, and the resulting 2002 (named after the new motor's displacement) was popular in its first year on sale Stateside.

BMW's 2002 Series is credited for inventing the category for compact sporting sedans, a category widely popular now through models from various German, Japanese and American makes of small 2-door sedans with high performance engines, suspensions and aggressive sports car like features.

The tii is considered by many to be the most desirable of all of the 2002 BMW's imported to the United States. Compared to a standard 2002, the tii version offers greater performance, and overall value. Thus, a 2002tii has additional value and offers not only additional performance but reliability, as well.

Since the last U.S. tii's were made in 1974, finding one in good shape, without owner modifications has grown increasingly difficult. This is especially true considering the tii's mechanical uniqueness, and cost of some of those unique parts. Furthermore, since the 2002 is a "tinkerer's car," many owners have upgraded their regular 2002s with tii hardware, to increase their performance.

Likewise, 2002tii owners sometimes strip their cars of original tii items such as the Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection system, in favor of cheaper (but not necessarily better) carburetors. These two factors can cause some confusion for a prospective 2002tii buyer.

VIN INFORMATION

The vehicle identification number is found on the metal plate under the hood, on top of the inner fender, behind the upper shock mount on the right side. It is in plain view, and should be easy to spot. On this plate, it will identify the car as a

2002 TII for 1972-73 cars. 1974 cars share the same identification plate as the standard 2002, so the plate will read 2002/2002tii USA. The VIN is the long number which is stamped into that plate.

For 1972-1973 U.S. tii's, the VIN will begin with 276, running from 2760001 (the first '72) to 2764522 (the last '73). 1974 tii's begin with 278, running from 2780001 to 2782929. This number should match the number stamped into the flange on the right front wheel housing itself, next to the fender, behind the hood lock bar, as well as the number stamped into the metal plate on top of the steering column. If the car still has its original engine block, the engine number on the block, above the starter mounting flange, will match the VIN.

ENGINE COMPARTMENT VISUALS - WHAT TO LOOK FOR

If you're specifically looking for a tii model, and prefer one in original condition, it behooves you to try and purchase a car with this system intact and functioning. The Kugelfischer injection system is what makes the tii special and gives it it's combination of midrange torque and top end power (of course, the higher compression helps here too). The lower front aluminum engine timing cover and alternator mounting location are different from a normal 2002, as well. Tii's also have an extra fitting on the intake side of the engine block for an injection pump oil return line as well as an extra fitting on the oil filter head for the injection pump oil feed line.

Finally, an original E12 2002tii cylinder head (late '72-'74 cars) will have no fuel pump mounting holes on it for a standard 2002 mechanical fuel pump. 121/121TI head equipped '72 tii's will have the mounting holes, but with the center pushrod hole plugged. The fuel pump mounting holes are used to mount the intake plenum on '72 cars.

BRAKES

The first clue to this may also be found in the engine compartment. Under the hood, the tii has a larger diameter (23 mm vs. 20 mm) master cylinder, and a larger (actually longer) brake booster. The dimensions of this larger booster are: 6 inches (152 mm) length and 7 inches (178 mm) diameter.

Under the car, the tii has larger front brake discs, which measure 10.08 inches (256 mm) in diameter vs. 9.45 in (240 mm) for the standard 2002. These are accompanied by larger calipers and pads, as well as larger hubs and spindles. The rear drums are the same size as a normal '02, but the wheel cylinders are larger (17 mm vs. 15 mm). In the rear, the trailing arms of tii are boxed, for increased stiffness (instead of the standard C-section).

CLOCK

Inside the car, a clock should be present. It is located on the left most end of the parcel tray.

THIS PARTIUCLAR 1974 BMW 2002 tii

There is little argument amongst BMW enthusiasts that the BMW "tii" is one of the most desirable of the early BMW sporting sedans. The cars enjoy a strong following by a wide range of enthusiasts and, over the years, excellent examples have become increasingly difficult to locate. Of course in "rust zones" around the USA/World, these cars were very vulnerable, and many deteriorated to the point of being un-repairable due to extensively rusted trunks, floor pans, chassis members, etc. Good continue to appreciate and there is every reason to believe that future values will continue to increase. To our way of thinking, considering all that the cars have to offer, it is very difficult to find a better all-around sports sedan from the 1970's, than the 2002tii.

This 2002tii has been under the care of its enthusiast owner driver, a vintage race car driver (primarily Alfa Romeo's), for the previous 5+ years. He purchased the BMW from a long time, Northern California owner. The owner currently resides in Nevada and the car carries a clear, transferrable Nevada title / registration. The car is available for inspection at Classic Cars Ltd., Pleasanton, CA. 925-846-1451

This BMW 2002tii carries VIN # 2781265 making it the 1,265th car to roll off of the production line in 1974. BMW fans will appreciate that the 2002 tii was manufactured in very limited numbers during the early '70's. In fact, for 1974 this particular car is one of only 2,928 cars that were produced in 1974. The car was painted by the factory in Malaga red (Factory Code 021/306) in color and was repainted a striking shade of dark metallic blue just over 5 years ago, seeing very little use (or exposure to the sun) since that time. The numbers of the car appear correct on the steering column, engine chassis plate and the right front (stamped) inner fender.

The car is being offered for sale only as a result of the owner's other priorities and interest in pursuing his vintage racing interests. During the previous 5 years, the car has only accumulated about 2,000 miles since the car's owner has been focusing on his street and race Alfa's.

OVERALL CONDITION

MECHANICAL

The 2002tii is a very strong running, driving car. In addition to receiving ongoing repairs & maintenance by its mechanically savvy owner, the car has recently received the benefit of some repairs by a local German BMW specialist here in Pleasanton, CA.

Specifically, within the previous 100 miles, the car received the following:

- Remove cylinder head, replace valve guides, machine valves, replace valve seats (as needed) and re-surface head, re-install & set all clearances

- New Battery

- Replacement of the cold start relay valve

- New spark plugs

- Complete check of fuel pressure, ignition system, drive belt (all with specifications)

- Independent inspection of all safety related items

Tires have been replaced within the previous 10,000 miles. While the tires show excellent remaining tread the independent safety inspection recommended the replacement of two of the tires due to unusual separation of the tread. The braking system has been re-done including slave cylinder, master cylinder and brakes. The required safety inspection shows the brakes with 75+% remaining life. The exhaust system is newer and included a replacement manifold. All other required safety items were found to be acceptable.

The engine on the tii pulls strongly through the gears, there is no noise in the drive-line and the transmission (and syncros) is excellent. The front suspension is good and the car steers straight. Of course, the BMW is especially fun to drive on twisty roads and after a short time behind the wheel it becomes apparent why the BMW 2002 (especially the tii) still enjoys such a positive reputation.

EXTERIOR

As the photographs suggest, the BMW is very presentable, has high gloss, even paint that is free from significant flaws / defects. There is no indication of any partial re-painting subsequent to the recent complete re-paint. A close, critical examination reveals the usual chips, scratches and imperfections. However, the body of the car is very straight with excellent panel fit and no indication of accident damage either current or past.

When the BMW was repainted about 5 years ago (been kept in a garage ever since), some of the rubber trim was replaced as was the windshield. The car has very nice, original California exterior trim including chrome, aluminum and glass.

The 2002tii is good looking example but has not escaped some of the more common 2002tii issues that can develop over the course of time. While the shock towers and undercarriage remain free from any signs of rust / damage, there are a few areas of rust on the car. Close up photos show a few minor paint bubbles on the rear fender well and a couple of other spots. The trunk is generally solid with the spare tire well showing some surface rust and 'thinning' metal although not badly rusted through as we see on tii's from the Midwest / East Coast. Note: A spare wheel is included, but not shown in the photographs.

When the car was re-painted, a very attractive front spoiler was added (refer to photos). It is in very good condition.

The undercarriage and chassis are free from any major rust through / damage. The floor pans are solid as are most areas of the remaining portion of the underside. The tii shows the normal "patina" and a few minor rust areas but no substantial structural rust or damage.

INTERIOR

The interior is in original and complete condition showing the usual wear that would be expected on an un-restored car of this vintage. The photographs will provide the prospective buyer will a good feel for the interior condition.

The seats both front and rear are free from any major damage and the carpet has been replaced within the previous 5~ years. The door panels appear to be original as does the dash, instrumentation and seat belts. While difficult to see in the photos, the dash has the typical few cracks seen on most 2002 BMW's that run from the windshield back, toward the passenger compartment.

The interior has been upgraded with a lovely Nardi steering wheel and matching Nardi shift knob. The car is fitted with a sunroof and the stock visors are in place. The headliner has been dyed black and is loose around the sunroof opening. The sunroof opens and closes properly.

All of the instruments are functional with the exception of the tii clock. Lights, turn signals and brake lights work.

SUMMARY

This is an excellent opportunity to own an affordable, fun to drive classic 2002tii. The tii is a car that is almost certain to continue to appreciate based on its limited production, price point, active enthusiast support and sheer "fun to drive" factor.
